Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
