Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
