Roughly 35,000 individuals could be compromised, cautions the US embassy

A major data breach in the Federal Republic of Somalia's digital visa application system may have exposed private data belonging to many thousands of applicants, involving American nationals, the United States diplomatic mission in Mogadishu has alerted.

It said gathered credible reports that "unknown cyber attackers" breached the Mogadishu administration's digital visa application portal, possibly exposing information belonging to at least 35,000 people.

The exposed records circulating online comprise names, photographs, dates of birth, marital status, home addresses and email contacts, as stated in a US embassy statement released on recently.

"This data breach remains active and could expose all private information submitted to the system," United Kingdom officials has additionally cautioned visitors.

"Consider the risks when considering application for a digital visa mandatory for travel to the Somali nation."

Government Response

Government officials have remained silent about the security compromise. But the government has transferred visa application system from the original e-visa website toward etas.gov.so, without issuing an official explanation.

"Although the US Embassy in Mogadishu is unable to confirm whether applicant details belongs to the security incident, travelers who have requested visas for a Somali e-visa may be affected," the US' statement declared.

Geopolitical Impact

The updated visa process requires each person traveling, comprising individuals from the self-declared republic of the northern territory and the semi-autonomous region of the autonomous state, to apply for entry visas online.

Critics say visitors have encountered supplementary costs in specific areas, equivalent to duplicate payments.

Regional Dynamics

The northern territory, which declared independence in 1991, administers its affairs via separate governmental bodies but has not been internationally recognised. The Federal Government insists that this territory still constitutes its sovereign territory.

The claimed security incident exacerbates long-running tensions concerning Mogadishu and Somaliland administration over control of national air territory. While federal authorities regained complete authority of national aviation space in the past decade, Somaliland continues to contest the current system.

Ongoing Conflict

The dispute worsened this week after the northern region's leader Abdirahman Irro stated the northern territory would not accept the federal e-visa system and instructed that airlines are required to secure clearance from Hargeisa before entering their territorial skies.

Nevertheless leading carriers have refused to board passengers absent Somalia's e-visa approval.

In the latest development, Somaliland's Foreign Minister the foreign minister reiterated that "every person entering the northern territory should receive their visa on arrival", stating Somalia's e-visa system posed risks and cautioning that "individual details could be accessed by radical elements" due to utilizing the system.

Passenger Complications

The stand-off has resulted in certain visitors destined for Hargeisa stranded at airports after being denied boarding due to absence of Somalia's e-visa.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, the aviation minister, has informed journalistic entities that the instructions - originally publicized in recent months - were implemented on 10 November.

He said companies that ignore would be instructed to reroute, and stated multiple planes were previously redirected.

Aviation Authority Dispute

Video evidence released by Somaliland's aviation ministry appears to show local air-traffic controllers issuing instructions to foreign aircraft commanders - a development celebrated domestically as an assertion of Somaliland's autonomy.

But the federal aviation regulator asserts it maintains exclusive regulatory authority over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (Flight Information Region), that includes the entire country's aviation space. Authorities have instructed every plane to pay no attention to any guidance coming from entities except Mogadishu.

Authorities alerted that ignoring national and worldwide air transport standards could pose safety risks and cause "serious legal consequences".
