Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the right to contest specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
